Mud and Tape

Project:  Mud and Tape

Materials:
  • Premixed Quickset Joint Compound
  • Paper Joint Tape
  • Corner Bead

Step by Step:
  1. To cover drywall joints - Apply a thin layer of joint compound along the length of the joint with a 4” to 6” Drywall or Putty Knife.
  2. Immediately press the joint tape into the thin layer of joint compound.  Be careful to keep the tape centered on the joint.  Run a 6” knife over the tape to smooth the joint and wipe away any excess compound.  Finish all of the joints this way and let them dry overnight or at least 3-4 hours.
  3. Apply a 2nd thin coat of compound to all the joints with a 10” drywall knife.  Allow this 2nd coat to dry and shrink 4 - 6 hours.  After the 2nd coat is dry, apply a 3rd finish coat and let it harden slightly before sanding.
  4. For inside corners - Apply a thin layer of joint compound to each side of the inside corner using a 4” drywall knife.  Fold a strip of joint tape in half and using the drywall knife press it into the wet compound.  Finish the inside corner the same way you would a standard joint.
  5. For outside corners - Position the Corner Bead on an outside corner and using a level adjust it so it’s plumb.  Attach the corner bead using nails or screws spaced every 8 inches.  Apply 3 coats of joint compound to each side of the corner bead using a 6 or 10” drywall knife.  Let each coat dry before applying the next.  Smooth the final coat with a wet sander.
  6. For screw heads - Apply 1 - 2 light coats of joint compound over the screw head using a  4” putty knife.  Don’t over do it!  Use just enough compound to cover the screw head.  Sand smooth when dry.
